ALFREDO DE LA FE
This is Alfredo De La Fe's first solo album! Those of you who are familiar with the music of Latin America and New York will recognize him as the aggressive young violinist of "La Tipica 73". For those of you whoare strangers to his music, don't turn away at the word "violin". Alfredo is an inspired player who makes full use of modern electronics and his own ingenuity to investigate all the potentials of this understimated instrument. He does not limit himself to a classical approach as is evidencedby his driving, rhythmic technique. You may occasionally feel the tug of a heartstring, but more often than not his music will it you below the belt!
Although he is still a very young man, he has been paying his dues as a professional musician for thirteen years. He has traveled an arduous path from the classical training of his childhood in Havana, Cuba, trough the musical stages of cuch varied influences as Jose Fajardo, Eddie Palmieri, David Amram (to name but a few), emerging now from the Latin music industry that has been "home" since 1966, to make his debut here.
The album could well have been titled "Friends", for it came about through the cooperative effort of many people, and the combination and fusion of several different types of music.
It is not a typical Latin album. The Salsa tunes in a heavy Charanga style which appear on the album are heavily spiced with the imaginative integration of Samba and "funk". The cuban song, "Que Rico Bailo Yo", arranged by Humberto Perera, musical director and bassist of one of Cuba's finest orchestras, "Ritmo Oriental", give delightful evidence of the growth and sophistication of the music of that island.
The balance of the tunes, which alternate from Latin to rock, disco and funk, borrows richly from the vast store of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. "My Favorite Things" arranged by Francisco Zunaque, is a jazz-classical fusion masterpiece that borders on the bizarre!
It was Alfredo's desire to experiment with the format of his first record, and thanks to the patience and vision of his producer and fellow musicians, he has been able to do so. Therefore, you will find "ALFREDO" to be a gourmet's sampling of an international feast of music combined lovingly by the hands of Alfredo De La Fe and friends.
Hope it leaves you hungry for more!
